All in for the Fifteen Minute Fame

When I was in the Philippines, my cousin was touring me around the streets when we passed by a huge crowd circling around a group of students fighting over a girl. The girl was continuously pushed and pulled between the two guys who were trying to claim her as theirs. To my surprise, everyone in that crowd just stood there watching with all their phones, one even had an iPad, recording the fight.  I was amazed that no one even tried to stop the fight or help the poor girl.  My cousin and I immediately called for help from other people since it was useless to ask the bystanders recording the scene.

We live in a society obsessed with becoming popular by posting things on social media just because they think it will go viral and make them have their fifteen minutes of fame. Bystanders are everywhere. Reacting to real life situations is overrated, and receiving approval and attention on social media networks is far more important than helping out a person. As sad as it is, this is the world we live in today.  We’re willing to let something like this happen as long as it translates to the pictures or videos taken to become viral on any social media platform.  What are your thoughts on this?  Have you ever experienced or witnessed something like this before?  What would you do if you were tangled up in a similar situation?
