Appearance and Truth
While I was reading a book called The Little Prince, I came across a paragraph that described a Turkish man who discovered an asteroid but, no one believed him because of the way he dressed. Later he began to wear European clothing because of an order by the Turkish dictator, and restated his discovery and everyone believed him. This reminded me of a part in Amusing Ourselves to Death which described an anchor lady named Christine Craft who was hired for her looks and fired for them too when research showed that viewers no longer liked her looks and therefore would not believe her. I think that judging the truth of someone’s words by their looks or what they are wearing is unreasonable. There clothes aren’t the ones speaking, and have nothing to do with the truth. A man in a suit could be the biggest liar in the world while a man in a clown suit could possibly never have told a lie. The same is with looks. If someone’s appearance doesn’t suit our liking, it doesn’t automatically mean their words are not believable. I think it is okay to doubt someone’s words when you have just met them and don’t know them very well, but I don’t think we should take something as a lie because someone is wearing different clothing or looks different.

I think that many people are judged for looking a certain way. If you are a different race you can often be judged by the stereotypes related to that certain race. One can assume that they are a liar based on their looks and race of that person. With that being said, I agree with your statement on people being judged by the way they look. Take the time to get to know someone before judging them and/or thinking twice about what they have to say.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that someone's appearance has nothing to do with their personality. Many people's first instinct when they meet someone is to judge their appearance, and it's a bad habit that's hard to overcome. It's a shame that many people in today's society value someone's image over their character.
ReplyDeleteSomeone's personality does have a contributing value to their appearance. One's looks is normally reflected by their traits. For example, a goth-dressed person projects their dark and mysterious personality whereas a man dressed in a suit portrays intelligence and a strong work ethic. However, the natural colors of one's skin or hair don't show their personality and in that sense, you guys are correct.
ReplyDeleteThis is true most of the time, but most people are different in their own way. They might dress like they're "goth", but that doesn't necessarily mean they like gothic things. People look at me and assume that I only like rap, but I personally enjoy listening to some rock every now and then. People like to judge without getting to know the person first. Almost everyone is guilty of this.
DeleteI believe that our problem is that people immediately judge someone based on if their appearance is pleasing to them. Looks can be deceiving though. People do not know what type of background others have, and in a way it contributes to how they think of them. Seeing someone have a clean or good look to them can give people a false sense of security, and if they don't know that person genuinely, they have the potential risk of being involved with danger.
ReplyDeleteI somewhat agree with this, people really do judge others by their appearance too quickly, even when they know nothing about them. Just because a person dresses differently than one would expect, it does not mean they are bad people and people really should not say much because they don't know about them. Sadly, it is just in human nature to judge because its something we've naturally grown into doing due to the examples set by society and we're practically trained to think of something and how it can effect us. Nonetheless, its no excuse for anyone to judge without getting to know the person first, and the same thing can be applied to anything we judge, really.
DeleteI agree in the sense that people judge off looks to quickly. If someone is dressed in ripped clothes, people just assume what they say is lesser than that of a well dressed person. In reality, that well dressed person can be someone who plays their way through life while that ripped clothes person may be telling the truth and nothing but the truth. No one knows for sure, but people just assume based of looks. As sad as that may be, I don't think that will ever change
ReplyDeleteI agree, as Steven expressed, that people are to quick to judge someone without even knowing their name. It is very sad to think people believe someone's looks reflect their sincerity but it is even more sad to know that people actually listen to this nonsense and as a result someone got fired for doing their job. I personally don't know how someone's truthfulness is judged based on the clothing worn.
ReplyDeleteI agree that people are way too quick to judge someone by their appearance. People are often judged for what they look like and what they wear because it doesn't "fit" their standards. People shouldn't be deceived a certain way for how they look because the way someone looks doesn't reflect their personality. Like you said, people dressed the nicest can be the biggest liars you meet while someone wearing something ridiculous can be the most truthful person you meet.
