Recently I visited the Broad Art Museum in Downtown Los Angeles for the first time and really enjoyed my experience. The staff were really nice but there were weird rules that they had to uphold against visitors. If you were carrying a backpack or purse of some-sorts, they demanded that you keep it in front of your body as opposed to being on your back or on the side. This rule was very weird and unforgettable from my experience. The staff members standing in the galleries only job was to watch if visitors touched the art or took pictures with flash but it seemed like they were just on backpack police duty for the visitors that forgot about their dumb rule. I was one of those visitors. I kept forgetting the rule because whenever I stopped to take pictures with my aunt and uncle I would then put my backpack on normally and would have to be told to put it on correctly. It got so repetitive that one staff member just told me to not bring a backpack the next time I visited. I have never experienced this weird rule at an art museum before and still have to visit many more. My point is, we are all conformists that follow through with rules that we don't quite understand but we do what we are told anyway to enjoy ourselves, that is why we comply. If I did not understand and apologize for my "backpack habit," I wouldn't have enjoyed myself in the museum. Would you also agree that some places have very strange rules? Are you okay with these rules? We don't need to go against the program if we don't understand one of their methods, we just go with it. Is this how society has become, is society filled with unorthodox methods and rules? Are we big conformists? Overall, in many places, there are methods to their madness. Would you say that even Mayfair has strange rules? Would you fight the "program" and demand change? Overall, I did enjoy myself at the museum and would probably recommend it to others. A little tip if you do plan on going, don't bring a backpack.
This "backpack rule" seemed goofy when I read it, but thinking about it, it's kind of logical. You wouldn't want someone accidentally knocking down a work of art because their backpack is so large! I've never been to the Broad, but I'm guessing that's why they have that rule. Yeah some places have strange rules but usually those rules are to enforce safety and enjoyment (such as no selfie sticks at Disneyland). To really enjoy a place, I believe you must follow the rules, they're there for a reason right? Also, I'm fine with Mayfair's rules and I don't really demand change in our rules.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Cheyanne, I was thinking that the backpack rule was for that intended purpose.
