I read an article on Room for Debate called "When It Comes to Office Attire, Most Anything Goes." The author, Simon Doonan, explains that over the years, the workplace dress code has changed. He states that in the 1980s, the appropriate attire was a classic button-up suit, but all of a sudden, the men on Wall Street were allowed to dress casual on Fridays. I think this is just something that grew and grew.
I feel like when you work somewhere in an office or a professional building period, the employees or staff are the reflection of the business. If someone were to walk into a bank and see a woman with revealing shorts, a halter crop top, and six-inch stilettoes, that person wouldn't want to do business with them and it would shine an unprofessional light on the company. I feel like employees may get the concept of dressing nice and dressing appropriate confused. One may think that they are dressed nice, but it's nice for a night club or a party, not a professional business.
For example, at my mom's job at the LA County building, the dress code is pretty strict. They are required to have professional attire because they are the model for the people who wish to enter the workforce. There are written guidelines with diagrams because some of the younger population consider dressing up as if they're going to a night club or party. Today, there is not a clear definition in younger people's minds of what professional attire means.
Since everyone has different views on what is appropriate to wear, what do you guys think of what should and shouldn't be worn?
I understand what you are trying to infer. I agree with this because people do genuinely take dressing nice and dressing appropriate and confuse it. In my opinion, at an office job a nice choice of attire would be a blazer and some slacks; however on a hot day I believe a nice blouse with a knee length office skirt would be just fine. Another situation that may be confused is because what to wear to church. I have this problem every Sunday because I feel like most of my dresses are either too short or too tight (showing all my curves)
ReplyDeleteI also agree with both of your points, but i also don't feel all kids in our generation don't know the difference between appropriate and nice attire. I personally feel that our generation is a little more revealing than most, but in moderations. Don't get me wrong though there are some who just dont care and reveal everything. That doesn't mean we should categorize the whole generation, because fashion is different nowadays. I feel as fashion, style, and body type play a big factor into this topic; therefore, some may not understand that based off there body type that they can't wear something else that someone else can wear with a different body. This is another reason why I think you shouldn't categorize a whole generation.
