We are Animals

As humans we often see ourselves at the top of everything else living on earth. Where Good Ideas Come From is all about the history of innovation and how it is shaping the world today and in the future. When regarding to the growth of innovated cities, "West's model demonstrated one crucial way in which human-built cities broke from the patterns of biological life: as cities get bigger, they generate ideas at a faster clip" (10). I realized that most of the time humans forget that we are part of the animal kingdom and that we are animals as well but, we just don't like to be called "animals" for it gives puts our feeling of being "special" at a low level. It is clear that humans are on the top of the food chain but what puts us at the top? Well, Steven Johnson answers that question by explaining the concepts of innovation and the benefits we receive from it, which is an advanced living and superiority. It is innovation and the power of speech that puts us at the top. From air conditioning to self-breaking cars, our lives are made easier and safer for us because of innovation. My question to you is, with all the things that has evolved us, should it be important that we remember that we are indeed animals belonging in the animal kingdom or should we just brush it off and live our human lives?

  1. The fact that people often forget about their connection in the animal kingdom, and like to seem more special than the animal label is very interesting. It's important for people to understand that even if innovation and the art of speaking puts us at a greater level than animals, it does not mean we are separated completely from animals. The similarities might be hard to find, but humans still belong in the animal kingdom. People have established their dominance through other animals as one of the few species to be able to craft by hand, and also have advanced communication skills with others. Remembering that we are apart of the animal kingdom is important, because people live in luxurious lifestyles that differ from animals. Sometimes, this innovated way of living has consequences to our environment such as elevated carbon dioxide or bad air quality. People designed cars as faster mobile transport, but the smog that the cars produced weren't as productive. This invention of the automobile caused an environmental disorder with its extra production of carbon dioxide and various fumes. Perhaps, if people remembered that they are still animals, they would strive to create more eco-friendly inventions that shared the non-harmful lifestyle as animals, but differed with the human side of innovation.

  3. I glad to see you made a post that makes a lot of sense. I agree that people forget that we are animals too. We separate ourselves from other animals and the way we treat most of them is not how we would want to be treated. Unfortunately, in life people always tend to forget where they came from.
