It's Everywhere
About a week ago I realized that some of my best ideas come during the night. I thought about why this was, and I chalked it up to that I'm not as distracted by technology at night. During the day it's all around me. My sister is watching tv, my brother is playing video games, and I get messages from people on social media as the day progresses. At night however, no one is awake, and I can put my full attention into my own thoughts. I had thought that I could possibly be more productive if I tried to avoid technology. I tried it for a week, and it was more difficult than I thought. I could easily avoid social media such as Instagram and Snapchat, but I had a harder time avoiding forms of entertainment like YouTube. I found myself bored, because I felt like I had nothing to do. It was also strange waking up every morning and not checking my social media, and I felt the same when I didn't check it before I went to sleep. Furthermore, at summer school we were shown educational videos, so I couldn't even avoid technology while learning. Some benefits I noticed by abstaining from certain aspects of technology were that I completed part of my summer homework, and I went to sleep much earlier than I normally do. I say aspects, because I couldn't just avoid every part of technology. I needed the computer to do my homework, my flip phone to keep in contact with my parents, and I could not stop listening to music. Trying to not listen to music was too difficult for me. As I type this, I am currently listening to Su Veneno by Aventura. The week went by slow, but luckily I had summer school and work to keep me occupied. It was challenging refraining from my electronics, not only because I was used to having them around, but because technology is seemingly everywhere.

It is pretty weird and a little scary to think about how much our lives depend on technology. It is everywhere we go and it's very necessary to have now. I'm not trying to bash on it though. I mean, I respect what you did because sometimes we do get too caught up in it and need a break, so well done! But I don't think any one of us goes a day without it so we can't complain. Like you were saying, we basically need it all the time with whatever we're doing, whether it be while learning, doing homework, communicating, etc. Technology is so necessary and fascinating that we very often overuse it and need to take the time to unplug ourselves from it just as you did.
ReplyDeleteYou have a really good point! I always find myself with the best ideas and thoughts when I am laying in bed at night. I work my best at night instead of during the day. It's a no brainer that the reason why is because I am not distracted by the technology surrounding me. I am able to put my phone down and really focus on my summer homework or whatever else. It's very hard to escape technology when we are constantly around it, so good job on the technology fast Jaime!
ReplyDeleteFor most people, it is mostly because people are usually occupied with something to do during the day. Some brilliant scientists develop great ideas during the night and it actually works. As of today though, like you said Jaime, we are surrounded by technology during the day but not before we sleep. The second we touch these technological devices, we sort of become attached to it and are lured in to look at what is going on.
ReplyDeleteI thought I was the only one who got good ideas during the night, but after reading your experience I notice that our generation really depends on technology and that is way too dangerous. Remember to the last time your house had a black out and you had nothing to do but see your phone’s battery slowing draining away and you probably said “oh no, I will have nothing to do if my phone dies, but at the same time saving the battery is useless as I only have my phone to entertain myself with”. I will admit that I am addicted to technology as I don’t socialize with people in public and because of that I view my phone as the only thing that I can “talk to”.
ReplyDeleteI agee! I always find it easier to do home work and be more productive at night when everyone is asleep. I have also tried to not use technology at times and it is very difficult because this generation does rely on it a lot. Although technology is very helpful sometimes people use it too much.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is indeed everywhere and I admire your effort to try to stay away from it. I probably would not have lasted long as the first thing I do when I wake up is check my phone for whatever reason. My biggest problem with technology is the Internet when I try to do homework. The rest of the Internet happens to become so interesting the moment I try to read a "Room for Debate". I will end up getting sidetracked at least once. I pretty much now have my phone out only when I need it while I do homework as it will become a distraction otherwise.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to working at night, I don't do it much because I need my sleep. However, I will admit to contemplating life right before I go to bed.
