Keep Calm, Wi-Fi is on the way
Talking to my mom about the recent commercials is our thing. One that catches my eye in particular is the recent AT&T commercials. The commercials vary with with different celebrities and actors. The one that really catches my eye is the one with a family that seems to be withdrawn from Wi-Fi for about 5-7 minutes. It is a 15 second video, but has a huge impact on how technology is taking over our lives. There is different segments from this commercial. My favorite is the one were the wife is "swiping" the photographs planted on the wall. The husband is trying to pull the wife away from the photos. It then goes to show a plan for high speed internet with a catchy slogan saying "Keep Calm Your Internet Is On." After reading Amusing Ourselves to Death, Postman gave me an idea on how television actually effects are lives and how it gives us signs weather we like it or not. This commercial gives us a sense that people can not function effectively without technology.

Though I have not seen the commercial you describe, I have seen many other commercials stressing the need for wifi. As in regard to your question I belive in this century for the majority of people (mostly the youth) it would be very difficult or plainly impossible to live without wifi, because of how dependent we have become of it. We recruit to the internet for everything; when looking for the definition of a word or when traveling we don't use a dictionary or a paper map we use google or the gps on our phones. This source is so accessible to us, it would be very challenging to live without it.

ReplyDeletePeople definitely can live without wifi; however, if one day wifi disappeared, it would take a lot of adjusting. One day, if we do lose wifi, there will be a reduce in global connections and interaction in long-distance relationships of all kinds. Furthermore, researching information would become a hassle. Now, during modern times, we depend on wifi so much it seems like a necessity. Just like people currently living in third world countries, anyone can live without wifi.

ReplyDeleteI am also greatly fascinated by commercials and how marketing advertises it's products in such a way. These entertaining commercials illustrate the importance of Huxley's argument in two ways. First, he is correct on how entertaining commercials effect the masses by purely entertaining us. Secondly, as you said, this commercial proves that today, we are very dependent on the internet. I know that if i don't have service on my phone or wi fi for a long period of time, I would freak out.

ReplyDeleteRegarding your question, I do not believe people, shining a light on the youth, would be able to function properly and live without wifi. There's countless amount of things that we do today that require wifi. I'm not going to sit behind this keyboard and type as if I'm not a victim of this situation, because I honestly am. One thing that really gets to me is when I run out of data for the month and I leave my house that does have wifi and I can't do ANYTHING on my phone. We depend on wifi to do so many things such as gps, the internet, social media, and maybe even this blogging site. It's almost as if wifi makes the world go 'round.
