Not So Smart Decisions

While reading "Here Comes Everybody" by Clay Shirky, I got to this part where Shirky talks about a story in which a church in Boston, Massachusetts had an abusive priest named Father John Geoghan who did various horrible things to boys over a span of many years. And what did the church do? They simply transferred him to another church and basically passed the problem on to them. What made me a bit more outraged is that the new church Geoghan was transferred to had to also move him to another church when he committed the same crimes. The only thing the parishes did to help the situation was give him therapy, which only helped for a bit. In my opinion, what should've been done from the beginning was to obviously kick him out of the church and priesthood forever. The only moment of calm and relief I had was when some members of the church came together to take action against an event that could ruin the image of their beloved church. Whatever made these churches make the decision they made boggles my mind but it happened. It's situations like this that make me so unhappy when people let bad things happen and only try to hide the situation rather than help solve it.  It makes me wish I was in those situations just to take the proper action against the wrong doings. I would like to hear your guys' opinions  on this story. What were your feelings upon reading about this?

  1. I also found this story mind boggling, for did they even think about the kids that he hurt. How would they feel knowing the man that abused them simply got promoted to a new job. Also when they decided to just give him counseling I was outraged they needed to put him in prison.
