One-Hundred Million Dollars to Change the World

If you could only donate one-hundred million dollars to charity, what cause would you donate to? I personally would have trouble deciding because there are so many good causes out there.

While I was reading on "Room for Debate", I encountered an article that said that the MacArthur Foundation was donating one-hundred million dollars to a charity with the most meaningful proposal. However, people are questioning if it will be enough money to solve a social problem. Many are debating that with the smart use of money, many problems could be solved. But, one-hundred million isn't enough to do this; there needs to be more money. There will always be hunger, poverty, and disease in this world. Donations to these types of foundations will help, but they will not completely get rid of the problem. Do you think more money should be donated to get rid of these problems? Do you think there is a problem that can be completely solved?

  1. Of course these problems seem to big to be solvable, but that doesn't mean that it's impossible. The way I see it is that it's like a long and very complicated math problem. There are a series of steps that need to be taken before it is actually solved. But you can't start the problem without a pencil and in this case the money given to these foundations is the pencil. All that we need to do now is go through the steps that lead to the solution

  2. I don't think donating one hundred million dollars to any charity would do much. It would cause massive inflation throughout the whole world. This would cause the prices of simple things like milk and bread to rise, causing even more problems like increased world hunger!

  3. As realistic as I can think, we won't be able to solve any problem but we can stall. World hunger is always going to be a problem I would think because as of now, there are more humans than available resources to be evenly distributed and with big wealthy companies normally only doing things for profit, nothing will get done. Humans are naturally greedy and will do what needs to be done for self preservation in terms of an individual. One hundred million dollars is a lot but for a social problem it's almost nothing relative to a breaking point.

  4. If I had to choose a foundation I would choose one that helps families who are less fortunate. No matter how much money you have I feel it will never be enough to end poverty in the world. It probably won't even be enough to end poverty in one country. One-hundred million dollars will be just the right amount for it to be helpful.

  5. There is no such thing called a solution in my opinion. Solving things will only create more problems. Sure, some problems(academic) can be solved, but there is an infinite number of problems that exist, and we could only do so much. Maybe a hundred million dollars might help out other people, it will place them in a new situation that they must live with. Should more money be donated? I would like to say yes as it is towards a better cause, but I know it will not bring us a problem free world.
