Television in Control!

I just finished reading Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death and the book was more interesting than I thought it would be.  Most of what Postman talks about has a huge amount of truth in it.  How politicians take shots at each others looks and attempt to display themselves as the better candidate through media.  Also how that there is no rule that tells us that we have to watch television but yet people will still continue to watch it endlessly. One of his main points that I could really understand were that Show Business over the course of twenty years has changed our culture and the way we think.  Sadly it has done so.  Television recreates religion, education, politics and discourse.  Religion is often spread through television programs or advertisements of the church.  Politicians debate and go at each others necks on national television.  Lastly education is being controlled by television.  Television has created this  whole idea that everything must be entertaining.  Therefore there must be "dramatization"(Postman) in lessons or else the students don't learn.  This holds the most truth of all because I myself learn better when the teacher makes what we are learning entertaining.  They can do so by showing documentaries YouTube videos and much more.  Making education more entertaining is something that can all be accomplished through media.  That is what makes television in control of education.  I don't think that taking away television completely will solve the issue of the hold it has an many aspects of life but maybe limiting it or changing some of the content can.  Do you think that television is in control of us?   If so what do you think the solution is for taking away television's power?

  1. In Amusing Ourselves to Death, Neil Postman changes our whole perspective of how television has changed the world. television has become an ongoing issue that is constantly involving. In my opinion, I don't think its possible to take away television not only because there are so many televisions in the world but also because that would mean taking away the internet as well. now and days, everything is accessed on electronic devices so, taking away television wont fix the problem, it will only make it worst. I honestly don't watch television anymore because it has become uninteresting, so essentially I mostly just use the internet and watch Netflix if anything. So, if anything is causing problems and should be taken away,i would easily say the internet and social media because it is a source for cyber-bullying as well.
